Tottenham better quality players than us so you can see why they shifted Defoe on. If he came he'd score the goals that would give us what we need for a mid table finish, then at the end of the season thank Billic for his 2 seasons and replace him.

Would he be the oldest striker we've ever signed or will Sheringham stay the record holder ?
Greaves - Scored on debut Radford - Never scored all season, so Zaza needs a chance !!!
Spring to mind but they were about 30 back then which would be 40 now

Re: Defoe

I never liked Jermain Defoe's style of play which is the 2nd striker. He has throughout his career, always needed a target man to play off. At Sunderland, a team that spends most of the game defending he can catch defenders on the quick break but if you watch him he continually gets shots blocked or loses the ball a lot before he ever scores.
He was always a greedy, selfish little fucker and rarely passed to a better placed team mate so I don't actually see him as being what we need. Most of his goals are actually penalties and I think iirc he has only scored 6 from open play.
Having said all that if Sunderland were to sell him I would welcome him because it condemns them and I think it would give the side a lift but, I cannot remember the last time we played with 2 strikers under Bilic. So is Defoe replacing Carroll? I don't see it working.
Surely Tottenham twice sold him because they stopped playing 2 strikers and he was rubbish as a target man or lone striker in an attacking team. He's just not big or strong enough to compete with big CB's except when the ball is on the floor and he's running at them.
The price doesn't bother me too much since I realised that we paid a €5m loan fee for Zaza so £6+m for a 2 season loan is the way to look at it. All this is likely to be academic anyway because Sunderland clearly are not going to sell him unless they give up the ghost...

That's what I can't believe. Gold's comment about an aging player with no sell-on is tailor made for a Fat Sam player. Short term thinking. No long term reward and a huge wage cost. Don't want the judas turd. As for best striker, wtf?

Age is no barrier for Jermaine, he is a supreme athlete that has looked after his self and has the capability to keep going for at least another ten years.

I am not a fan of buying an old man but you know what I have no problem in saying this " Jermaine Defoe was probably the best striker West Ham have had in the last 25 years his movement and Intelligence and shot accuracy are all very good but he is 36".

What makes that stat even more astonishing is that he has that tally from such a poor team.
I would rather us spend 12 mill on him than a punt that's for sure. Ibra and himself proving their age isn't an issue. Would be perfect for us for say 2 years maybe.

Carroll 25 in 88 apps - endlessly injured. Defoe 30 in 70. Leaves 6 for the rest! Does show how poor the rest have been though. Cannot believe we want a 36 year old though!

Gold is a beardy idiot at best and more likely a conniving club killing scum bag.
However finally he is thinking about things he should - the long term benefit of a signing.
Far too often we are reactionary and try and stick a band aid over a gaping wound.
Defoe would be a big transfer, on big wages, at the end of his career with little of no sell on value. With his not that impressive goals to games ratio he is a quick fix at best and another pointless waste of money at worst.
Let's actually think about more than the next few months for a change.

From BBC Sport
Since Defoe joined Sunderland in January 2015
Defoe has scored - 30 goals
Carroll/Sakho/Valencia/Zarate/Maiga/Ayew/Jelavic combined - 31 goals
Speaks volumes............

I had a moment of enlightenment when I realised that Zaza cost us €5m for a loan shortened to 6 months....
Defoe was worth £6m on that basis...
